What is a Mala?

A mala is a Sanskrit word that means "garland." This sacred string of beads typically consists of 108 beads, each representing a prayer, mantra, or affirmation. The number 108 is deeply significant in Hinduism and Buddhism, symbolising the wholeness of existence and the cosmic connection between the sun, moon, and earth.  At the end of the mala, there is an additional bead known as the ‘guru bead’.  This bead holds special importance and serves as a point of pause and reflection during your meditation or prayer practice. When you use the beads, close your eyes, chant your prayer as you follow the beads one by one, passing them between your middle finger and your thumb.
